Creating a Clear Vision for a Limitless Future!

The dawning of a New Year is an excellent opportunity to undertake new things – if you know what you want!

Many people come to coaching because they want “more” from their jobs, careers, relationships and many other facets of their life.

The starting point is to establish what it is they want. To ask the question:

“If there were no restrictions at all placed upon you – if you had a magic wand – what would you want to be, do or have?”

It takes time to work through this stage. As humans, we will almost immediately start to vet and then delete ideas as they form in our minds, often before we even articulate them!

I have observed that reminding my clients (and myself, coincidentally) to note down every idea, no matter how far-fetched it may seem, is one of the best ways to support them through this process. Afterwards, we can explore all the options. Often, the floodgates open once the client begins contemplating the possibilities, and the ideas flow rapidly. As Coaches, there are many tools at our disposal to support our clients through this stage, and the most helpful way is to ask my clients to write each separate idea on a post-it note.

Once we feel that (for the time being) all avenues have been thoroughly explored, we can filter the ideas. At this stage, we can start grouping things and witnessing the emergence of patterns because we noted down the thoughts. Out of this will come an overall vision for their future, and then we can break things down piece by piece to create a workable action plan to achieve what they want.

The client will sometimes experience a clear “winner” – a passion/thought/need that will emerge as a prominent theme throughout all the generated ideas. This thing will be so gripping for the client that their enthusiasm will become tangible, causing a visible change in their physiology as they begin to talk about it and envision themselves achieving it.

For other clients, things may be more balanced across a range of different areas, though often, the achievement of each of them will actively support the achievement of other identified goals.

Neither one of these outcomes is “better” than the other – both will be of best service to that individual.

Identifying what we want regularly and reviewing all we have achieved in the last week, month, or year is the key to consistently improving and developing ourselves and benchmarking our progress against our long-term plan. We choose to do this as each New Year starts, though anyone can do it anytime.

So, what’s your 2024 Vision??
